The witches of Motherland Fort Salem sang their final song on Tuesday, and the world will quite literally never be the same. TVLine spoke with series creator Eliot Laurence about the finale’s “unapologetically hopeful” ending, but before we share his thoughts, here’s a quick recap While Alder traveled the world, frantically searching for the final piece of the First Song, the witches of Fort Salem defended their home against the Camarilla. A familiar scenario? Absolutely, though this battle appropriately titled “Revolution Part 2” had a much happier ending than the one that served as last season’s finale aka “Revolution Part 1”. That’s not to say that this battle was all sunshine and rainbows. We’re sorry to report that Anacostia Quartermain was killed in the line of duty when she saved everyone from being crushed by a flying truck. She herself did not survive the impact, but don’t worry, we’ll get into that tragedy with Laurence later. The finale’s climax took place — where else — inside the Mycelium. But rather than Raelle ending existence with a witch bomb, as Tally foresaw, Alder arrived on the scene with a crucial piece of news. The Bellweathers were once stewards, and the missing final piece of the song was in Abigail all along. Cue the music! As the Mother via Alder would later explain, that song changed the word. “Long ago, I merged with six women. I changed their voices, and the way they hear. As my gifts traveled down their lines, descendants of the six came to be known as witches. Now my gift is freely given, thanks to you three. They are awake, all of them, singing one song.” And before Alder dissolved into the ether, she dropped one more little bombshell on them “They will call you goddesses.

2022-06-07T184448Z When we last saw the witches fighting for and against the United States Army at the end of season two, the witch plague was a constant threat and the Army found itself under attack from the Camarilla. Abilgail Ashley Nicole WIlliams, Tally Jessica Sutton and Raelle Taylor Hickson managed to save Fort Salem from the Camarilla’s plague, but found themselves on the run from President Wade Sheryl Lee Ralph and the Army despite their the show returns for its final season, the trio finds themselves seeking protection from an unlikely source. The Freeform press release teasesThe end of season 2 of “Motherland Fort Salem” left Abigail, Tally, Raelle and Scylla Amalia Holm fugitives on the run. Now without a military nor a home, they seek protection alongside the Dodger community in the Cession — but laying low and staying out of trouble has never been their strong suit. Motherland Fort Salem It was little surprise that developments worked out poorly for the fugitive witches. The big question remaining at the end of Motherland Fort Salem Season 3 Episode 3 was whether they were better or worse off than before. The problem has been that the Bellweather Trio, especially the two Tarim, weren't prepared for life on the run. Raelle at least was aware of the Dodger culture in The Cession. But since Mycelium Mom Willa was treating her condition, Raelle was unavailable to offer her perspective. Scylla was forced to take the lead because Nicte's first instinct always was to attack, which is not a great strategy when you're outgunned in foreign territory. Nor when you have a missing, young team member. There was no choice but to split up, with Scylla and Nicte distracting the marshals so the others could search for Khalida. They could have stayed together, but Scylla didn't have a full pack of Salva for everyone. Still, her and Nicte being decoys while the prize targets, Abigail and Tally, escaped was the right call. The major obstacle was that Scylla and Nicte both had strong personalities and were bound to disagree. Also, Scylla was understandably concerned about what was going on with Raelle, and she spent too much effort trying to reach Raelle when she should have been looking over her shoulder for the marshals. So it was little surprise that Scylla, already on edge, and Nicte, mainly lacking in people skills, ended up brawling, so the marshals didn't even have to sneak up on them. They did manage to determine how Horse was tracking them, following their works, and managed to divert him once or twice. But that was too little too late in the long run. If the marshals could capture the experienced fugitives, it was no shock that they could pick up the trail and catch up to the newbies, who didn't know enough to keep moving. It was a hoot to watch Adil try to levitate on Salva. You would have thought the Tarim had some similar magic. He was much steadier when he hit solid ground and got his hands on that magical Tarim compass. He seemed surprised to discover Khalida was moving quickly away from them. But how to pinpoint where exactly Khalida was? If only they had somebody who could see into the future. Oh, that's right! They had Tally. Her powers are strong but erratic at best. She issues a warning about the results every time she uses them. Fortunately, they worked this time. Tally saw that Khalida was at a roadhouse, exactly where you'd expect to find a young pre-teen escaping marshals. But we've all suspected Khalida is an old soul in a young body. Who can say how much magical knowledge she has that hasn't been accessed yet? She could become a significant factor in the upcoming war with the Camarilla. The roadhouse was precisely what one would expect to find in The Cession. There was no Patrick Swayze, but there was a big surprise instead. Where else would a resurrected Sarah Alder pop up but a Cession road house slinging shots to her former soldiers? That made perfect sense. Even freakier was what brought Alder to the roadhouse. She sought the dive's singer Elayne, who didn't know she was a witch but had been working with stolen songs for decades. Somehow this collector of magical tchotchkes had gotten her hands on the first song remember the witches singing it way back when?, and Alder wanted to get it back. Why? It's probably crucial to the upcoming war with the Camarilla. So the fact it's in the pocket of the captive Tally probably isn't a positive development. Elayne had some skills. It was amusing to watch the fugitive witches dance to her song, snapping out of it when the music ended. Tally fell back into her former stuttering self out of the shock of seeing Alder alive again. Before long, they were back working together, rummaging through Elayne's trailer for the missing song. Unfortunately, the witches got caught, except for the disappearing Alder. And who killed Elayne and removed her voicebox? Is there a Camarilla among the marshals? Also, whose side are the marshals on since Horse took his captives to a mansion, not jail? Anacostia and Izadora brought President Wade up to speed about all the Camarilla hidden in her administration. And when Wade moved up her address to out them, you knew she wasn't long for this world. Somehow, the Camarilla snuck in using the old camera-crew trick again. After that explosion, Wade sure looked in bad shape. Does this mean Camarilla Silver will be moved up immediately into her role? If so, things are looking worse for the witches. Hearst's star continued to fall among the Camarilla. After he gimped back to his office/hideout, Kara reprimanded him for making the Camarilla look bad with the chemical plant fiasco. He appeared to relish her abuse. After that, he performed a bizarre ritual in his evil-looking lab. Is that what the captured witches have to look forward to? To revisit Alder's resurrection, watch Motherland Fort Salem online. Didn't you always know that the Bellweather Unit was special? How special wasn't revealed until really late on Motherland Fort Salem Season 3 Episode 10. Developments shook out predictably in this final battle with the Camarilla. After all, the witches have been using their powers for centuries. The Camarilla were employing stolen powers and jury-rigged equipment. Experience was gonna prevail. If only The Mother hadn't allowed the witches to dig themselves such a deep hole. If she's all-seeing, why didn't she warn them earlier that the Camarilla were conspiring against them? I guess they had to learn the hard way that humans fear those that are different. You would have thought that history had taught them that already. The political and military leaders eased up on the Camarilla far too soon. They only had one of the leadership triumvirate in custody Silver, and they lost him. Meanwhile, the crazy leader Hearst had all the soldiers and the toys. So it was little wonder that he was able to make Kara disappear at a crucial moment in the Camarilla's history. Here I thought she was the wily one but I guess not. Prospects had looked gloomy for the witches at the end of Motherland Fort Salem Season 3 Episode 9 with the Camarilla overrunning Fort Salem. Fortunately, conditions improved for a couple of characters by the time the series finale began. Most importantly, Izadora, who appeared to have had her throat slashed, wasn't dead after all. She must have had a potion for that. So she ended up being the only officer with any authority that viewers have heard of behind enemy lines. Even though she was thoroughly drugged, Izadora still managed to get into Hearst's head indeed, not a pleasant place to visit, essentially telling him that The Mother was going to kick the Camarilla's ass. It turns out she was quite right, but it took some doing. Reconstituted Penelope had to play some role in the battle's climax because otherwise, why bring her back? So Hearst deciding to send a canister full of Penelope back to headquarters to use as a party favor for Silver was bound to be a turning point. Petra's small raiding party intercepted the red shirt nice touch carrying that canister and sent it back to Izadora to use as she saw fit. Izadora's coffee had to be awful if she could add Penelope's ashes to it, and nobody noticed. Penelope had already shown how much rage she had for those she held responsible for her early death. So it was refreshing to watch her use the witch plague which killed her to off Hearst and her pathetic father. Unfortunately, since Izadora lived, someone from the main cast had to be sacrificed. That somebody ended up having to be Anacostia. Alder doesn't count because she lived on borrowed time anyway. Anacostia giving a heartwarming pep talk to the Bellweather Unit and Scylla should have been seen as a sign of her personal apocalypse. Anacostia was always on the outside looking in for most storylines, especially this season. So that truck crushing her really shouldn't have been a surprise. Still, it definitely had shock value. Also, Nicte showed up at exactly the right time with her bats to keep the neverending stream of faceless Camarilla occupied. No, as expected, the battle came down to Alder and the Bellweather Unit, along with their significant others Adil, Scylla, and Gerit. Poor Alder, visiting an unfriendly Ghana seeking that last piece of the First Song. And all that time, the answer was so much closer than she realized. Her research in ancient volumes proved what had been hinted at all along There was more to Abigail than her impressive weather powers. Part of that lost Bellweather family history was that essential piece of the First Song. It was in her blood. But reaching the climax wouldn't have been possible without Raelle, who seemed to be barely hanging on for much of the finale. Hearst's scheme to poison the mycelium with those injectors placed around Fort Salem hit both Alder and Raelle hard, and Raelle spasmed and infected Scylla and Adil, knocking out half of the small squad. Fortunately, Raelle rallied and used her status as The Mother's chosen one to create an escape tunnel through the mycelium for everyone but Nicte and Gerit, who, face it, was expendable as Tally's beau, even though he did survive. At the moment of utter despair, when Raelle couldn't heal Scylla and Adil, Tally had her epiphany, realizing, "Hey. It's all about us." No duh. Tally also discovered that her scrying required some interpretation. Her vision had shown Raelle helping to save the world, not destroy it. Whoops! Alder and Khalida showed up just in time with a quick explanation, and it was time to sing, sing a song. And as The Mother cleansed the globe, Tally got her sight back, giving her a front-row seat to what was happening. Thanks to Eliot Laurence for having Alder as The Mother's mouthpiece give a recap of what had happened since the dawn of witch hood. All that had occurred in this too-short series made much more sense afterward. And the unit becoming goddesses? That won't give Abigail even more of a swelled head, will it? Now let's bring Motherhood Fort Salem back in some form TV, film, book, graphic novel. These characters are too good just to have go away.
